The Great Barrier Reef
Marine Park was established in
1975 and is the world's largest
marine protected area. It is
made up of nearly 2900
individual reefs very close
together which include 760
fringing reefs and 300 coral
cays.
The coral offers just as much in
variety and colour offering
every variety you can think of.
There are many options to see
the Great Barrier Reef from Port
Douglas as Port Douglas is the
gateway to the Great Barrier
Reef.
The Agincourt Ribbon Reefs are
long narrow reefs located along
the very Outer Edge of the Great
Barrier Reef, flushed out at
every tide by clear oceanic
water welling up from the Coral
Sea Trench nearby. These
pristine reefs are opposite the
Daintree Rainforest, well north
of any agricultural run-off from
cultivated areas, and provide
the best possible diving and
snorkelling opportunities. A
highly recommended tour boat to
go on would be
POSEIDON
OUTER REEF CRUISES. All of their sites
have been selected for both the
shallower coral gardens favoured
by snorkellers, and the adjacent
deeper walls and drop offs
preferred by scuba divers.
Poseidon has also been awarded
one of the few permits to swim
with Dwarf Minke Whales. These
friendly mammals are regularly
encountered from May to
September; while their larger
cousins, the Humpback Whales,
appear from July to September;
and are increasing in numbers.
The fish are nothing short of
spectacular ! Turtles, eels,
reef sharks, clams,
sponges, rainbow fish, butterfly
fish and sea cucumbers are just
a few -
snorkelling or diving on the
reef creates lifetime memories..
For the more adventurous or
those who may not have the time
for a boat trip there are also
helicopter and seaplane tours
that offer the reef from a
different perspective!
